Reading with a Pencil
A small discipline for noticing what a familiar passage actually says.
Familiarity can make a passage feel shorter than it is. I recognize the opening words, remember the usual conclusion, and travel between them without noticing the road.
Reading with a pencil slows that movement down.
Mark what the text repeats
Repeated words are not always the main point, but they are rarely accidental. Circling them makes the structure visible before I decide what the structure means.
Write the question before the answer
A question in the margin preserves the moment before explanation. It keeps interpretation from disguising itself as observation.
These notes are records of a developing understanding, not claims to formal teaching authority. The hope is that showing the questions makes the reading more useful, not less.
